After many months of talking and researching, we finally broke ground and started our very first garden. Nothing is planted yet, but little by little we hope to have a crop of fruits and vegetables by the summer. I have used the Backyard Homestead Book as an instructional guide, along with my neighbor who has a garden. He has been so kind to give us some starter plants that are growing in his greenhouse. I look forward to the relationship that will develop due to the gardening we will have in common. On Saturday, the weather was a perfect 68 degrees and the soil was damp, so we headed outside. We measured and plotted where we would build up the raised beds. We dug and raked. Some of us worked a little harder than others, but it was definitly a family project. We are trying to spend as little money as possible on this garden. So far, the project has cost us nothing. Even the 12X20 garden shed was given to us by my sister's church. We will hopefully find a really good deal on the fence. Matt will pour the concrete for the remaining 7X12 slab in which to place the rest of the shed. I am so excited to see this finally taking place. The children are all at an age where they can help. We look forward to reaping what we sow.
